The right size depends entirely on placement. The three most common wedding spots each have different sizing sweet spots:
- Head table / sweetheart table backdrop: This is usually viewed up close by seated guests, so a sign in the 60–90cm width range reads clearly without being overwhelming.
- Dance floor or reception backdrop: Since guests view this from further away, sizing up to 90–150cm keeps it legible and photo-ready across the room.
- Ceremony arch or entrance: These need to hold their own against an outdoor or large indoor space, so 100cm+ is common, especially for short phrases like a couple's surname.
Think About What Your Text Actually Says
Sizing isn't just about the space — it's about your wording too. A short phrase like "The Andersons" needs far less width than a full line like "And they lived happily ever after." As a rough guide:
- 1–2 words (a surname, "Love", "Est. 2026"): compact sizes work well, even in smaller rooms
- A short phrase (3–6 words): mid-range sizing keeps every word legible without stretching the sign too wide
- A full sentence or quote: you'll either need a larger sign, or consider stacking the text over two lines to keep the width manageable
Measure Before You Order
Before finalising your size, it helps to:
- Measure the actual wall, arch, or backdrop space where the sign will sit.
- Leave breathing room — a sign that exactly fills the space can look cramped; aiming for it to take up roughly 60–75% of the width usually looks more intentional.
- Consider the viewing distance. A sign that looks perfectly sized on your desk can look tiny across a reception hall.
