So your custom neon sign has arrived — now what? Whether it's going up in your bedroom, above your home bar, or as a backdrop for your wedding, hanging your sign the right way makes all the difference between a sign that looks like a professional install and one that looks like an afterthought. Here's everything you need to know.
What's in the Box
Every Neon Seasons sign ships with everything you need to get it on the wall:
- Your custom LED neon sign, mounted on a clear acrylic backboard
- Pre-drilled mounting holes
- Power adapter and cord
- Dimmer switch (and remote, if you added one)
- Wall plugs and screws for standard mounting
Because the backboard comes with holes already drilled, you won't need to measure and mark anything yourself — just line it up and go.
Step 1: Pick Your Spot
Before you touch a drill, hold the sign up (or have a second person hold it) where you want it to go. A few things worth checking:
- Is there a power outlet nearby? Most signs come with a 2–3 metre cord — if your outlet is further away, you may want an extension cord or to reposition the sign.
- Will it get direct sunlight? Signs still look great in daylight, but they really shine (literally) once it gets dark, so think about the room's natural light too.
- Is the wall surface solid? Drywall, plaster and timber are all fine with the included wall plugs. For brick or concrete, you'll want a masonry drill bit, which isn't included.
Step 2: Mark and Drill
- Hold the sign against the wall at your chosen height and lightly mark the two (or more, for larger signs) mounting holes with a pencil.
- Use a spirit level or level app on your phone to make sure your marks are even — nothing throws off a sign's impact like a visible tilt.
- Drill at your marks and insert the wall plugs provided.
- Screw in the mounting screws, leaving a small gap between the screw head and the wall so the acrylic backboard can slot over it.
Step 3: Hang and Connect
Lift the sign onto the screws using the pre-drilled holes, then plug in the power adapter. Most signs include a dimmer switch inline on the cord — this lets you adjust brightness for daytime versus nighttime use, which is especially handy for bedrooms or spaces where you don't want full brightness all the time.
Alternative Mounting Options (No Drilling Required)
Not keen on drilling into your wall? A few renter-friendly alternatives:
- Command strips or hooks: Rated for the sign's weight, these work well for lighter, smaller signs.
- Freestanding stands: Some signs can be paired with a stand or leant against a shelf or mantle for a no-fuss look.
- Hanging from picture rails: If your home has a picture rail, fishing wire or clear hanging wire can suspend the sign without any wall damage.
Outdoor and Event Installations
For weddings, parties, or shopfronts, signs are often propped on an easel, hung from a marquee frame, or wall-mounted temporarily using strong adhesive hooks — just make sure your sign is rated for outdoor use if it's going to be exposed to the elements, and keep the power cord and adapter protected from rain.
A Few Safety Tips
- Always use the power adapter that came with your sign — it's matched to your sign's voltage.
- Keep cords away from foot traffic to avoid trip hazards, especially at events.
- If mounting outdoors, check the sign's IP rating and use a weatherproof power point where possible.
